The Biotechnology and Biosciences PhD program (BIOTECnico) stems from a partnership between Instituto Superior Técnico-University of Lisbon and the Institute for Bioengineering and Biosciences (iBB) at IST.

Instituto Superior Técnico

The mission of IST, the largest and most reputed school of engineering, science and technology in Portugal, is to create and disseminate knowledge and to provide students with the education and knowledge tools to improve, change and shape society through science, technology, and entrepreneurship. IST has over 10 000 students (42% are PhD and MSc students, 21% are foreign students) and about 1300 professors/researchers with PhD. IST hosts several Research Centers/Institutes and Associate Laboratories (LA), including iBB. Under the coordination of the Department of Bioengineering (DBE), the BIOTECnico program brings together faculty members with expertise in Life Sciences and Engineering areas.

Institute for Bioengineering and Biosciences

iBB is among the major players in interdisciplinary research in Bioengineering and Biosciences directed towards the Industrial, Agro-Food, Health, and Environmental sectors, producing high-impact research, promoting doctoral training and engaging into collaborative research, development and innovation programs with companies and top international research groups. Research activities on the focus of this PhD program are carried out by two complementary groups: BSRG (Biological Sciences Research Group) and BERG (BioEngineering Research Group). They offer an interdisciplinary and international scientific environment and facilities adequate to perform innovative cutting-edge research in the program areas.
