EIMPack - Economic Impact of the Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive is a R&D project, sponsored by the European Investment Bank and carried out in the Center for Management Studies of Instituto Superior Técnico.

The main goal of the EIMPack Project is to evaluate the economic impacts resulting from the implementation of Directive 94/62/EC on packaging and packaging waste, assessing whether the current state of affairs is satisfactory when compared with alternative strategies or if it is advisable to consider a revision of the targets imposed to all Member States.
With this purpose, the work plan includes the following:
  • Assessing the extra-costs of recycling and on how are they being distributed among stakeholders throughout the whole life-cycle of packaging waste;
  • Determining the economic rate of return of the added environmental protection through a cost-benefit analysis.

The 1st International EIMPack Congress will focus on the economic and environmental costs and benefits of recycling of PACKAGING WASTE. In fact, the current consumption patterns resulted in a great increase in production of packaging and, therefore, of packaging waste, which (when inadequately treated) has high economic and environmental impacts. In this context, the European Directive intended to provide a high level of environmental protection by encouraging member states to reduce waste production and increase recycling rates.

The recycling of packaging waste (when reuse is not a feasible option) is traditionally the preferred treatment option, since it allows for the production of secondary raw materials, reducing the consumption of primary raw materials as well as the amount of waste incinerated and/or landfilled (with inevitable environmental impacts). However, more recycling does not necessarily mean lower financial costs.

The EIMPack Congress will have the Recycling of Packaging Waste: Considering all the Costs and all the Benefits as general theme and the top experts in this area were invited as keynote speakers.

This congress will be a great opportunity for networking, meeting and discussing with top academics, government administrators, private operators and decision makers.
